Introduction to Radiens#

One software platform for neural recording and analysis#

Research use only. NeuroNexus products and the procedures described here are for non-clinical research use, and must not be used in human or veterinary medical procedures.

Radiens from NeuroNexus is a single, scalable software platform that spans the electrophysiology workflow — from recording to result. It reads any acquisition stream live, carries a recording through acquisition, curation, analysis, and exploration, and keeps your data on your own hardware.

Audience: Users, lab managers, researchers, purchasing departments, and system administrators evaluating neural recording software

What Radiens is#

Radiens is one integrated platform whose applications cover every stage of electrophysiology research:

  • Adapts to your protocols: The platform fits changing experimental protocols and requirements.
  • Clear interfaces: Designed for efficient research workflows with a short learning curve.
  • Broad compatibility: Works with diverse neuroscience hardware and existing software.
  • Scales with the work: From single-cell to large-scale network recordings, from your workstation to on-demand cluster.

Built for research workflows#

  • Research-specific design: Built for neuroscience workflows and experimental requirements.
  • Flexible architecture: Accommodates diverse research paradigms and evolving protocols.
  • Cross-platform: Consistent operation across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Apple silicon.
  • Extensible: Python and MATLAB APIs for custom development.

Key capabilities#

Interactive visualization and modeling#

  • Interactive probe models: 3D visualization of electrode-array configurations.
  • Automated probe mapping: Recognition and mapping of probe geometries.
  • Brain- and target-centered models: Atlas integration for anatomical context.
  • Real-time visualization: Live display of neural activity during recording.

Spatial analysis#

  • 3D neural-activity mapping: Spatial representation of neural data.
  • Anatomical registration: Alignment of recording data with atlas coordinates.
  • Multi-dimensional analysis: Spatial, temporal, and functional dimensions together.
  • Interactive exploration: Adjust visualization parameters for detailed analysis.

Signal processing#

Live and post-hoc analysis#

  • Real-time spike sorting: Live isolation and classification of neural units during recording.
  • Post-hoc spike sorting: Spike sorting after the session, with version-pinned open-source pipelines (Kilosort, SpikeInterface).
  • Signal-quality metrics: Continuous assessment of recording quality and electrode performance.
  • Flexible referencing: Quick optimization of recording configurations.

Data processing#

  • Filtering: Signal conditioning and noise-reduction algorithms.
  • Artifact handling: Identification and removal of recording artifacts.
  • Signal enhancement: Improve signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Multi-channel processing: High-density electrode arrays (1,024+ channels).

Cross-platform support#

  • Windows / macOS / Linux: Full feature support, with native performance on Apple silicon.
  • Python API: Programmatic control and custom analysis.
  • MATLAB integration: Works with MATLAB analysis workflows.
  • Third-party integration: Compatible with existing research software.

The applications#

Allego — real-time acquisition and control#

  • Instrument control: Direct control of data-acquisition hardware.
  • Real-time analytics: Live analysis and visualization during collection.
  • Live monitoring: Continuous assessment of system performance and data quality.
  • Probe-centered interface: The interface is organized around probe configurations and workflows.
  • Plug-and-play: Automatic recognition of connected hardware with minimal setup.
  • Impedance checking and referencing: Electrode validation and reference optimization.

Videre — analysis, curation, and exploration#

Videre is the analysis and exploration surface. Curation and analysis are workflow stages within it, not separate products.

  • Analysis and exploration: Work through stored electrophysiology data with spatial and target-centered views.
  • Curation: Organize, validate, and annotate datasets; quality and provenance travel with the data.
  • File conversion: Convert to .nex, NWB, and .bin with lossless preservation and batch processing.
  • Signal conditioning: Configurable digital filtering with real-time preview.
  • Data slicing: Extract by time period or channel for targeted analysis.
  • Signal-quality metrics: Quantitative assessment and quality reporting.
  • Publication-ready graphics: High-resolution 3D visualizations for manuscripts.

RadiensPy — the free Python client#

  • Full programmatic control: Everything the applications do, via Python and MATLAB scripts.
  • Well-documented API: For scripting and composition.
  • Scriptable and agent-operable: A clean, structured interface (JSON, markdown, stdout).
  • PyPI availability: Install through the Python Package Index.
  • Python ecosystem: Integrates with the broader scientific-computing stack.

Data management with Allego#

The .xdat file format#

  • Simple and efficient: A file format designed for electrophysiology data.
  • Component structure: Distinct components for binary sample data, timestamps, and metadata.
  • JSON metadata: Experimental metadata in a human-readable format.
  • Compatible: Works with common electrophysiology analysis software.
