In Radiens a trial is one recording: one Record start-to-stop in Allego, saved as one streaming data file; trial, recording and data file name the same object.

The trial is the unit the software manages. Event-gated analyses such as the PSTH accumulate responses within a trial, live as it streams in Allego or afterwards in Videre, and a trial's metadata (subject, probe model, headstage, sampling rate, filter settings, channel map and processing history) travels with the file, which is what keeps a recording interpretable and reproducible.

Above the trial the hierarchy is study ⊃ experiment ⊃ session ⊃ trial. A session is an implanted subject and an operator acquiring data, and contains one or more trials; today Radiens presents sessions as recordings grouped by time rather than as a managed object. Study and experiment are organizational tiers in the laboratory's planning, not software objects, and because 'experiment' in laboratory speech often means a single session, Radiens specifications use trial and session as the precise terms. The subject is the implanted animal. The file formats a trial is written and read in are under NWB; starting and stopping trials is session control.
