An open standard for neurophysiology data and metadata, enabling interoperability and reproducibility.

Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) is a community-driven data standard that defines a common language for neurophysiology data and metadata. NWB files contain all measurements for a single experiment alongside the metadata needed to understand the data — acquisition parameters, electrode specifications, stimulus information, and processing history.

Why it matters: Without a standard format, neurophysiology data is effectively locked to the software that produced it. NWB enables data sharing across labs, tools, and time. It is the primary format for public data repositories like DANDI (Distributed Archives for Neurophysiology Data Integration).

Architecture: NWB uses HDF5 as its storage backend with a YAML-based specification language defining four primitive structures (Groups, Datasets, Attributes, Links). The specification uses object-oriented principles for type reuse and composition.

Community adoption: Used by 53+ labs and research organizations across species from flies to humans (Rübel et al., eLife, 2022).

Relevance to Informed Electrophysiology: NWB provides the archival container; Informed Electrophysiology provides the quality metadata that makes archived datasets truly reusable. Quality scores, impedance histories, and assessment results can be encoded in NWB extensions.
