In vivo recording means recording neural activity from living, intact animals (as opposed to in vitro recordings from isolated tissue). This is the gold standard for understanding how the brain works during natural behaviors.
Why it matters: Only in vivo recordings capture the full complexity of neural processing during behavior, with intact circuitry, neuromodulation, and sensorimotor integration.
Types of in vivo recordings:
Considerations: In vivo recordings require surgical expertise, animal handling skills, proper anesthesia or head fixation, and often custom behavioral apparatus. Chronic recordings add challenges of implant longevity and tissue response.
Signal differences from in vitro: In vivo recordings typically have more background activity, movement artifacts, and physiological noise, but provide functionally relevant neural activity patterns.
