A band-pass filter passes signals within a chosen frequency range while attenuating frequencies above and below that range.
Why it matters: Band-pass filtering is the essential first step in neural signal processing. It separates the high-frequency spike band (300–6000 Hz) from the low-frequency local field potential band (<300 Hz), enabling independent analysis of each.
Common settings: Spike detection: 300–6000 Hz. LFP analysis: 0.1–300 Hz. EEG/ECoG: 0.5–100 Hz.
Implementation: Applied digitally during post-processing (Radiens Curate) or in real-time by the data acquisition system. Filter order and type (Butterworth, Bessel) affect phase distortion and transition sharpness.
