NeuroNexus helped create the commercial silicon-probe industry. Founded in 2004 as a University of Michigan spin-out by Daryl Kipke, Rio Vetter, and Jamille Hetke, it took the Michigan probe out of the lab and into labs worldwide, which seeded a field now vital to neuroscience. NeuroNexus was acquired by Integer (formerly Greatbatch) in 2012. In 2019, the founders, with Tom Hook and several neurotechnology colleagues, formed the NEL Group to buy it back and return it to independent, founder-led operation. In the years since, through a global contraction in public research funding, NeuroNexus kept advancing its innovation programs — which are now reaching the market — and still leads the field it started.
